MLK365 Urban Tree Connection Volunteer Day

MLK365 Program                                      Urban Tree Connection

Please join MLK365 and the Urban Tree Connection on Saturday, April 23, 2011 at 10:00 am at the Neighborhood Foods CSA for a day of community gardening and urban farming.

The mission of the Urban Tree Connection (UTC) is to assist urban, low-income communities to reviatlize their neighborhoods by transforming abandoned open spaces into safe and functional places that inspire and promote positive human interaction.

The Urban Tree Connection began its partnership with MLK365/Global Citizen by hosting a project for the 16th Annual Greater Philadelphia Martin Luther King Day of Service. UTC hosted a King Day project at the Girard College Signature Site event where volunteers painted gardening stakes to be used in the spring at their various community gardens.

We are excited to continue this partnership by working together to coordinate this April 23 volunteer day. Volunteers are needed to assist with a variety of tasks at the Neighborhood Foods CSA, including planting seeds, weeding, laying compost and mulch, removing litter, and more.

Volunteers are asked to wear attire appropriate for gardening and comfortable footwear. UTC staff will be onsite to lead volunteers and will provide gardening gloves and tools to complete tasks.

Volunteers should bring a water bottle and snacks if desired. The Neighborhood Foods CSA is easily accessible via SEPTA; please visit www.septa.org for directions via public transportation. On-street parking is available in the neighborhood surrounding the location. Click here to view a detailed map of the area, noting the entrance of the CSA.

You may RSVP to volunteer through this invitation by clicking the "REGISTER" button. If you have questions, please contact MLK365 Staff at (215) 665-2655 or mlk365@globalcitizen.us.com.

Global Citizen & MLK365

Global Citizen is non-partisan organization dedicated to promoting civic engagement, community volunteering, civic responsibility and sustained active citizenship among diverse groups, particularly young people.

Our issues of focus include poverty, homelessness, at-risk youth, education, public health, digital inclusion, energy and the environment.  Global Citizen is a weaver of community webs, bringing together people of all ages and backgrounds.  We work to build diverse partnerships through volunteer service, thus realizing how much more we have in common than our differences.

Global Citizen was founded by Todd Bernstein, who helped Pennsylvania U.S. Senator Harris Wofford and Atlanta Congressman John Lewis create the National Martin Luther King Day of Service in 1994.  Bernstein started the first local King Day of Service in Philadelphia in 1996.

MLK365 is a year-round program that promotes sustainable civic engagement and volunteer opportunities.

The goal of MLK365 is to ensure that Dr. King's legacy and principles are embraced throughout the entire year.  The initiative emphasizes Dr. King's legacy of nonviolence, social justice, equality and excellence.

MLK365 serves as a year-round clearing house for continuing service opportunities, as well as supporting and designing volunteer programs for its partners.
